We’re celebrating our fifth year of sailing by highlighting 5 actions we’re taking to preserve the marine environment and our maritime heritage of the Piscataqua Region. The Gundalow Company works closely with our volunteers, passengers, crew and staff, and organizations from around the region to improve our watershed in a variety of ways.
Great Bay Clean Up
In June, the Gundalow joined PREP and the Stewardship Network of New England for the first ever Great Bay Clean Up. We picked up over 360 pounds of trash from around Great Bay and plan to continue the effort throughout the summer. Learn more here.
Ocean Plastics
Each year, the Gundalow Company brings attention to a variety of issues through our education and public sails. This summer, as part of our Contemporary Coastal Issues Speaker series, we are highlighting the growing concern around ocean plastics by inviting Rebecca O’Brien from Surfrider and Kara Lavender Law from Sea Education Association to discuss plastic in the ocean. Check out our complete speaker series.
Sustainable Fisheries and Food
Great Bay, the Piscataqua River, and the Gulf of Maine are home to a variety of fishering industries. There are many ways to support and encourage sustainable fisheries, and this summer we’re hosting brunch on the Gundalow with a several local fisheries experts to highlight the importance of the local fishing industries.
Citizen Science
The Gundalow Company is working with the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management to monitor for marine invasive species at our dock and at three other locations along the Piscataqua River. In addition, Gundalow volunteers and crew are raising oysters as part of a project to help with Oyster Restoration in Great Bay. Learn more here.
Education
The Gundalow Company is committed to protecting the marine environment and maritime heritage through education and action. Each season we welcome aboard a hundred school groups, thousands of people for charters and public sails, musicians, experts, campers and volunteers. Our variety of programs touch on maritime history, marine science, STEM topics, local issues, and so much more. Everytime the Gundalow heads out for a sail we encourage people to learn about our watershed, and take action to protect our waters. Learn more about our programs.
