The Gundalow Company is joining forces with several local groups to help clean up Great Bay. Together with Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership and UNH Cooperative Extension/The Stewardship Network: New England we are staging a 1 day clean up of multiple sites around Great Bay. During the month of May, volunteers around Great Bay have spent hours in their kayaks and canoes, surveying the shores of Great Bay to locate and map garbage and marine debris. The Gundalow Company is excited to be taking action to protect the marine environment of the Piscataqua Region by becoming involved in a citizen science monitoring project . This project is run through the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management and monitors 23 invasive species at over 38 sites from Rhode Island to Maine. With no current monitoring in NH, the Gundalow crew and volunteers will be establishing 3 sites along the Piscataqua River under the guidance of Jeremy Miller from the Wells Reserve. Our apprenticeship program is a specially designed opportunity for youth ages 15 years and older. During our sailing season, each apprentice becomes part of the ship’s crew and participates in caring for the Gundalow, working with the Captain and crew while underway, and supporting our education programs. While every apprentice will gain sailing, teaching and boat maintenance experience, we also offer apprentices the option to pursue their own interests within our organization.
