meet a director Catharine Newick
GUNDALOW ROLE
Catharine is a member of Gundalow Company’s board of directors, and previously served as Chair of the board from 2017 – 2019. Now, she is a member of the Gundalow board’s Finance and Governance Committees.
PERSONAL DEETS
“I work as a Forensic Economist for attorneys on legal matters. I previously worked for a national economic consulting firm in the Boston area. My undergraduate degree from URI is in Mathematics and I completed doctoral studies in Economics at Boston College. My husband Mason’s business, Pen & Inc., is in the gift trade, where his large line includes a Maine artist, Anne Kilham. We have two daughters, Emily in Norwich, Vermont, and Kate in New London, NH. We have 4 grandchildren: Sally 8, Hartley 8, Lucy 6 and Estelle 6. We live in Canterbury, New Hampshire, but spend close to 5 months in York Harbor, Maine.
PERSONAL INTERESTS
“Anything to do with education and the ocean environment. As a college student, I taught sailing as a summer job and spent many hours racing sailboats,” recalls Catharine. “As an adult, sailing Penobscot Bay is our favorite vacation. We have taken our children sailing each summer since they were 3 and now have the good fortune to take our grandchildren. The Piscataqua gundalow is often the first time a child or adult actually sees Portsmouth from a different perspective. It reinforces the idea that if you see it, you will appreciate it. Concert cruises on the Gundalow are one of our special treats in the summer. Winter activities are centered around cross-country skiing with our kids and grandkids. More sedate activities include reading and travel.”
A FAVORITE FAMILIAR QUOTATION
“To those whom much is given, much is expected.” (Anonymous, Holy Bible: King James Version)
WHY SHE LOVES GUNDALOW COMPANY
“A former Gundalow board member was on the board of The Derryfield School in Manchester with me. He introduced me to Molly Bolster (Gundalow’s former executive director). I was familiar with the ‘Adams’ gundalow (precursor to today’s gundalow, ‘Piscataqua’) because it sailed past our house as it moved up the York River to the Hancock wharf, and I knew that Paul Rollins was building a new gundalow. After meeting with Molly and realizing that the Gundalow’s mission of education focuses on the environment, I was excited to join this organization. It combines my interest in education with my love of the ocean,” says Catharine.
