Join the dynamic crew of the Gundalow Company, seeking a part time Operations Assistant to coordinate with our events, marketing, and ticket sales. This person will work directly with the Operations Manager and Events Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

  • Share the Gundalow’s mission, programs, events, and volunteer opportunities
  • Manage the Gundalow Company Welcome Center store at 60 Marcy St., Portsmouth
  • Sell tickets and merchandise using provided workstation & devices
  • Answer the phone, respond to voicemails, take care of guests’ questions
  • Assist with marketing, including online posts and distribution of flyers/schedules
  • Work with dockside Ticket Sales Associates for passenger boarding as needed
  • Assist office staff with event planning, data entry, mailings, and other tasks
  • Implement weekly communications schedules shared among Operations and Education staff.
  • Help manage the websites for gundalow.org, piscataquariverfest.com, and roundislandregatta.com.
    Collaborate on regular outgoing communications such as eblasts in MailChimp
  • Attend weekly staff meetings

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to learn about the Gundalow Company’s mission and local history
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills, with careful attention to detail and commitment to excellence
  • Experience with Google Docs/Sheets and Microsoft Office products
  • The ability to be self-motivated, organized, and adaptable; to work both independently and as part of a team; to prioritize and manage multiple tasks; and to complete tasks under time constraints

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
The nonprofit Gundalow Company’s mission is to protect the Piscataqua region’s maritime heritage and environment through education and action. To fulfill our mission, we use a recently built, traditional, wooden gundalow as our floating/sailing classroom for school groups, River Rats Camp, Public sails and private charters.

COMPENSATION:
While the Gundalow sails May through October, this position is year-round including off-season fundraiser events, planning and non-sailing events.

Part time, 20-25 hours per week. Ideal candidates would be available on some weekend days from June-Sept to assist ticket sales staff for boarding.

TICKET SALES AND OUTREACH ASSOCIATE

JOB DESCRIPTION

Gundalow Company seeks a self-motivated, organized, and enthusiastic individual to join our team ticket sales associates. This is a part-time seasonal position with around 20 hours a week available on a very flexible schedule, typically from around noon to 6pm. Ideal candidates would be available 2-3 days a week through September, and 12-5pm on weekend days through the end of October. At least one of Saturday/Sunday per week expected.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Process ticket sales using a tablet and phone at the “podium” by the dock in Prescott Park
• Answer the phone, take care of passengers’ questions
• Facilitate the boarding process, check-in passengers, coordinate boarding time with crew

REQUIREMENTS:

• Outgoing, and eager to talk to people by the dock, especially leading to ticket sales
• Ability to “read your audience” – not everyone wants to go sailing!
• Ability to sell tickets on the phone and using a tablet – training provided
• Willingness to learn about the Gundalow Company’s mission and local history

SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR
 
Our summer counselors plan and run our growing camp both on the Gundalow and on shore for kids ages 5-13. Our camps place emphasis on environmental literacy and maritime history, and are rooted in experiential place-based education. Starting with training in June, Counselors will work together to develop activities for and lead camps. Counselors will fulfill direct leadership roles,  further developing competencies in: program planning, leadership, outdoor education, safety assessment, teamwork, communications, and behavior management. This is an exciting position with a supportive team, and opportunities to design and implement your own program ideas.

Requirements:

  • A strong environmental ethic, plenty of enthusiasm, flexibility, skill in public speaking, and a positive attitude.
  • Experience and willingness to work with youth.
  • Must have or be willing to get CPR/first aid Certification.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with or without direct supervision.
  • Must be available mid-June-August. Fall opportunities may be available.
  • Good communication and organization skills.
  • Bonuses provided for those willing to get a NH commercial boat license- cost will be covered by the Gundalow Company, and you will go through on the job training. 
  • Candidates must have reliable personal transportation, and no excessive conflicting commitments including travel, work at other jobs, or other non-emergency leave of absence.
  • Marine education, local knowledge, or traditional sail experience is a bonus!

Responsibilities

  • Help plan, manage and run our growing summer camp program for youth ages 5-13 onboard the Gundalow and on shore.
  • Works closely with the Program Manager, Camp Manager, Captain and crew and to ensure a high quality camp program.
  • Assist other camp staff, crew and counselors in training (CITs) during weekly camp program.
  • Organize, plan, and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week.  Activities may include crafts, songs, games, hikes, swimming, kayaking, etc.
  • Ensure safety of all campers and staff. Ensure a clean and hazard-free camp site.

EDUCATOR/DECKHAND:

Gundalow Company, Portsmouth, NH

Must be available mid-April through mid-October.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Gundalow Company seeks a passionate, self-motivated, flexible, organized team-player to work onboard the Gundalow “PISCATAQUA,” and on shore in a variety of educational roles. This position collaborates with all staff and crew and helps to implement our school programs, camps, public sails, charters, and events. Educators work up to 5 days a week with varying hours (25-40). This is not a liveaboard position.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A strong environmental ethic, plenty of stamina, flexibility, skill in public speaking, positive attitude, and willingness to share our mission with the public.
  • Must be willing to work some weekends and holidays.
  • Marine education and traditional sail experience are preferred.
  • Must have or be willing to get CPR/first aid Certification.
  • Must be willing to train to Coastguard safety standards, including initial and random drug testing.
  • Must be available mid-April for essential crew training, and have limited external commitments through the season (April-October).

RESPONSIBILITIES: EDUCATION

  • Execute daily school programs as simultaneous educator and deckhand. Involves teaching education stations related to history and marine science both onboard the Gundalow and on shore – will train. 
  • Promote public involvement with our organization. Encourage members of the public to- volunteer, become members, and come sail with us (through ticket sales and messaging).
  • Work closely with the Captain and Program Manager to ensure a high-quality onboard education program.

RESPONSIBILITY: VESSEL

  • Operate rigging, helm, and vessel mechanisms as needed.
  • Assist Captain to ensure safety of vessel and passengers at all times. 
  • Supervise deck operations during day sails.
  • Assist in training volunteer crewmembers.
  • Support gundalow maintenance plan.
  • Process ticket sales using a tablet and phone at the dock in Prescott Park as needed.
  • Facilitate the boarding process, check-in passengers, coordinate boarding time with Captain.

Volunteer Opportunities

EDUCATION VOLUNTEER

Education volunteers present Piscataqua Maritime Region specific learning stations to students and the public as part of our shore-based programs and onboard programming. Volunteers may select to work with our school programs May, June, September and October, or as a communicator with the public on shore, onboard the Gundalow, or at events.  This is an unpaid position.

Requirements:

  • A strong environmental ethic, flexibility, skill in public speaking, and a positive attitude
  • Marine education and traditional sail experience are preferred but not required
  • Experience teaching and working with youth and/or the public
  • Education Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 40 hours over the season from May-October according to an agreed-on schedule with the Program Manager

Education/Programs

  • Run school programs and teach education stations related to history and marine science onboard the Gundalow and on shore and/or communicate the message of the Gundalow Company with the public in a variety of settings
  • Work closely with the Program Manager and other educators to further the mission of the Gundalow Company

Youth Apprentice Program

Our Gundalow Apprentice program focuses on work aboard the Gundalow and communicating our message and mission to the public for youth ages 15-17.  Our Camp Apprentice program provides training and guidance in running on the water and waterfront camp programs.  For detailed descriptions of the different programs, please see below.

Our outreach is successful thanks to enthusiastic volunteers who teach, interpret, and promote our mission, as well as serving as deckhands to maintain and sail the boat.
