GUNDALOW ROLES
Paula is a deckhand and assists with office tasks. She also volunteers at the Round Island Regatta. Michael too is a deckhand. An experienced photographer, he captures activities aboard Piscataqua during school and public sails. Many of his photos can be seen at the Gundalow website and in publicity brochures. He also works at the Round Island Regatta. One of his favorite tasks during summer is River Rats day camp, showing campers how to row and be safe in Wherries.
PERSONAL DEETS
Paula grew up ½ block from Long Island Sound, in Stamford, CT. Michael is from Brooklyn, NY. Upon settling in Stamford, they purchased a Catalina sailboat from a friend. They loved sailing on the Sound and were ‘rail meat’ helping to balance the load on a friend’s boat during weekly races. Paula has a PhD in immunopathology and Michael an MBA in quantitative analysis. Their commitment to sustainability and protecting the environment led them to become UNH Marine Docents, where they help educate students and the general public.
PERSONAL INTERESTS
Paula is experienced in fiber arts (knitting, quilting, weaving) and an excellent cook. Michael is an avid photographer who exhibits his work in solo shows and contributes photographs to local magazines and websites. He teaches photography in one-on-one lessons and is a volunteer photographer for various nonprofits and events. Paula and Michael are experienced adventure travelers to remote locales, visiting 6 of the 7 continents, including 2 trips to Antarctica.
HOW THEY CAME TO LOVE GUNDALOW
Not being able to move their sailboat to seacoast New Hampshire due to a lack of moorings or slips, they sold their boat. Missing being on the water, they thought, “Let’s find someone who has a boat!” They met Nate Hazen, who told them about the joys of working on a Gundalow. At a Portsmouth Sail & Power Squadron meeting, Nate introduced them to Molly Bolster, Gundalow’s executive director at the time. She was speaking about plans to building a new Gundalow (the ‘Piscataqua’)…”The rest is history,” says Michael.
