Join the Gundalow and Steve Weglarz for a sail and talk about Oyster Farming on Great Bay.
Steve Weglarz
Steve grew up near the beach in Lynn, Massachusetts, learning about the ocean by exploring the tide pools and watching The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau TV series. He worked 2 summers on a gillnetter out of Nahant, wrestling dogfish bound for the UK fish and chips market.
After graduating from UNH with a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Steve worked for 11 years as manager of a commercial Atlantic Salmon farm for New England Fish Farming Enterprises in Bristol, NH.
He then spent several years at Marine Biotech Inc in Beverly, MA designing, building and installing aquaria for live seafood and organisms used in genetics research.
In 1998 he was recruited to help open several stores for a fast growing building materials chain, and after 13 grueling years of retail management with Lumber Liquidators he decided to return to his passion for aquaculture. He applied for an oyster farming license with the NH Fish and Game Dept. in 2011, and started his Cedar Point Shellfish farm in Little Bay near his home in Durham.
At the same time however, an interest in energy efficiency spawned a career as a Home Energy Rater (aka HERS Rater), which he now balances, somewhat precariously, with his life as an oyster farmer.
His wife and 4 children see him mostly in winter, when the oysters hibernate and the family skis together. Never one to rest, Steve works the winter weekends at Waterville Valley as a ski instructor and is a member of the US Telemark Ski Team.
